This is the 5th year of the Connemara Green Festival and every year it continues to grow and expand with this year welcoming a third day of activities and events which includes a mini environmental conference on the Friday with 2 walks to choose from. The main aim of the festival is to raise awareness of the unique ecology of Connemara and raise funds for biodiversity projects and conservation of the local environment.

This year’s theme is ‘Craft, Culture and Wilderness’. The festival will take place from Friday the 11th to Sunday the 13th of October and is based in Letterfrack village, Connemara, at the foot of Diamond Hill in the Connemara National Park, along the Wild Atlantic Way.  The weekend includes walks with local ecologists and historians, nature workshops, foraging, visiting a special native woodland, harvesting seeds, kiln drying timbers, basket making, willow weaving, stand up paddle boarding and boat trips in Letterfrack Bay. All ages are welcome!

The official opening of the festival takes place at 6.00pm in the Connemara National Park, with the guest of honour – Peter Sturge M.B.E. launching the book ‘Sophia Sturge and the Basketmaking industry in Letterfrack 1888-1905’ together with author Joan Johnson.

One of the highlights of the festival will be the Connemara Green Feast on Saturday evening the 12th of October at 6pm and will be a sample tasting menu showcasing local food produce and foraging. It will take place in the Pangur Ban restaurant in the heart of Letterfrack Village.  Places are limited so make sure to book on the website www.connemaragreenfestival.ie. Tickets cost €40.00 and all proceeds will go to actions for conservation.

Most of the activities over the weekend are free of charge and some require booking. Please check the website for more details. The Connemara Green Festival ends on Sunday with a walk through the community woodland and a small glass of something special to celebrate this wonderful place, land and seascape.
